Bringing Our Woodworking Expertise to the Year 6 Classroom!

At Precision, we are passionate about inspiring young minds through hands-on projects that teach real-world skills. We were thrilled to partner with Worsborough Common Primary School to lead a series of Woodworking lessons for their Year 6 children. The project’s mission? To design and build a fully functional bike shed for the school’s children to store their bikes and scooters.

Hands-On Woodworking Experience

The practical sessions were where the project truly came alive. Our team provided the children with an engaging and safe environment to learn and work on the bike shed.

Lesson 1: Safety and Tools

We kicked off by teaching the children about health and safety when using tools like drills and saws. They learned to measure timber accurately and discovered that cutting longer pieces was easier to handle. This introduction built their confidence in using tools effectively.

Lesson 2: Building the Framework

Using measuring tape and squares, the children marked out precise drill points. They then assembled the frame with timber, using impact drivers to secure the pieces. This practical approach taught them essential skills in woodworking and playground equipment assembly.

Lesson 3: Adding the Finishing Touches

The final stage involved attaching the shed doors. The children worked meticulously, drilling and aligning the hinges for a perfect fit. Seeing the finished product was a proud moment for everyone.

Turning Ideas into Reality

The project concluded with an evaluation session, where the children reflected on their hard work. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing excitement about learning new skills and even asking to build more!  This hands-on experience gave children:

  • A practical understanding of woodworking.
  • Teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Confidence in turning ideas into reality.

It’s been an amazing hands-on learning experience for the children and every single child has thoroughly enjoyed it, with most of them not wanting to go home and to build more products. We can’t wait for next year’s lessons!
