Bespoke Physical Climbing Structure Boat

Overview

Ivanhoe Primary School wanted a physical climbing structure that not only promoted physical play but also encouraged children to explore and engage in imaginative, investigative play. The goal was to create an outdoor play area that would provide a dynamic and interactive space for children.

Design & Features

The school approached us with an exciting request: they wanted to create a bespoke physical climbing structure for their Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) outdoor area. After seeing our Salvation Army playground structure, they were inspired to design something similar but with added investigative play features. The vision was to incorporate a boat as the central structure, with additional features to enhance imaginative play, physical development, and exploration. Our design team took inspiration from the original concept of a boat and customised it to fit Ivanhoe’s specific needs. The result was a bespoke boat-themed climbing structure that became a highlight of their EYFS playground.

Balance Beams with Armoured Rope Netting

Helping children develop balance, coordination, and strength as they navigate the beams.

Crawl-Through Tunnel with Rubber Mulch

Providing a fun and safe space for children to hide and crawl through, encouraging both physical and imaginative play.

Telescope, Binoculars, and Steering Wheel

These elements invited children to engage in pretend play, using the instruments to “explore” and “navigate” their imaginary world.

Traverse Climbing Wall and Log Ladders

Offering both challenge and excitement, allowing children to test their strength and coordination while climbing.

Platform with Steps

Giving children access to a higher vantage point to encourage roleplay and imaginative exploration.

Pergola Roof Canopy

Creating a shaded, cosy space that could be used for various activities, making it a versatile play zone.

Rubber Mulch Front Opening

A flexible feature that could be used as a hideaway or dressed up according to the current topics, encouraging creativity and roleplay.

The Outcome:

The physical climbing structure has quickly become a favourite for both children and staff at Ivanhoe Primary School. The children absolutely love the chance to crawl through the tunnel, climb the ropes, and pretend they’re off on an adventurous voyage with their friends. The balance beams and traverse wall provide a great way for children to enhance their physical skills, while the telescope and steering wheel spark hours of imaginative play.
The staff are thrilled with the added functionality of the structure, as it not only promotes physical development but also offers an area for imaginative roleplay, problem-solving, and social interaction. As for the boat-themed structure, we couldn’t resist adding a little joke: Why did the boat go to school? Because it wanted to “sail” through its lessons!
