Overview
Birdwell Primary School approached us with an ambitious vision: to deconstruct their traditional, open-plan playground and replace it with a purposeful, curriculum-aligned landscape. The goal was to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” space and instead create a series of dedicated learning “rooms” that inspire curiosity and physical development. We worked hand-in-hand with the school to design a natural, flow-based environment where every square metre serves a specific developmental purpose.
We transformed the site into seven distinct zones of discovery, using natural waney-edge timber and sustainable materials to maintain a cohesive, organic aesthetic. The final master plan included:
A custom-engineered climbing ramp built around a central existing tree, paired with a large traverse wall and premium artificial grass for all-weather agility and play.
A sleeper-walled sanctuary featuring integrated sand walls, a bespoke "H" frame pulley system, and a timber bridge for adventurous entry.
A future engineer's dream, featuring a dedicated digging pit, pebble wall, construction table, and a bespoke timber "drill" and storage shed for loose-parts play.
We rejuvenated an underused track by inlaying high-grade artificial grass and adding speed humps to encourage physical coordination and imaginative role-play.
A tranquil retreat featuring a sensory discovery path, a timber pergola with integrated planters, and convex "bendy" mirrors to encourage language and self-discovery.
Featuring a manual hand pump and adjustable Perspex chutes, allowing children to explore the physics of water flow while building upper-body strength.
Our signature storytelling set, featuring twin handcrafted storyteller thrones and whimsical grass-topped stools for social reading and quiet reflection.
By utilising assorted heights of sleepers and natural fencing, we created distinct “rooms” within the playground that maintain clear sightlines for staff while providing children with a sense of immersion and focus.

The Birdwell project represents a shift in how schools view their outdoor assets. By moving away from “tired tarmac” and into a multi-dimensional landscape, the school has turned an unloved area into the most popular destination on campus.
Our installation approach was sympathetic to the site’s natural geography. We utilised the central tree as an anchor for the climbing zone, ensuring the new equipment felt like an organic part of the school grounds. Every area was finished with safety and longevity at the forefront—from the heavy-duty canvas covers on the sand pits to the climate-proof artificial turf. The result is a high-functioning outdoor classroom that actively supports teachers in delivering every aspect of the EYFS curriculum in a fresh, engaging way.
“The transformation is simply breathtaking. Precision Timber didn’t just give us new equipment; they gave us a curriculum-rich environment where our children can thrive. The zoning allows for much calmer, more purposeful play, and the craftsmanship is second to none.”
The Birdwell Primary project is a testament to our “big picture” philosophy. We believe a playground should be more than just a collection of timber; it should be a map of a child’s potential. Schools trust us because we understand the nuances of the EYFS framework, ensuring that the quiet thinkers, the budding builders, and the high-energy explorers all have a space to grow. We take immense pride in the British craftsmanship that turns a flat playground into a multi-dimensional world of discovery, built to endure for generations to come.
