The foundations of Precision Timber were formed in a haven of creativity: small workshop in Yorkshire, known simply as “Grandad’s Garage”. It wasn't just a shed, but a sanctuary of genuine craftsmanship where the scent of sawdust met decades of inherited skill.
Grandad, a master carpenter, had spent his life honing his skills and building an extensive collection of tools. He didn't just teach us to use these tools, but also the importance of precision, patience, and the integrity of natural timber. These early experiences shaped the way we still work today.
It was here that siblings, Amy and Sam, alongside Amy’s husband Tyla, developed a shared and unwavering passion for woodworking and design. They gained an understanding of what good craftsmanship really means: understanding the material, planning the process, overcoming problems, and building something designed to last.
The workshop may be very different now, but the principles behind Precision Timber have stayed remarkably similar.
With a passion for woodworking and creativity instilled by Grandad, our three founders combined their unique expertise, enabling us to create bespoke outdoor spaces with a strong understanding of child development.
Sam brought experience in engineering, construction, and operational management, alongside a practical approach to problem solving. His focus has always been on turning ambitious ideas into structures that work in the real world, balancing creativity with practicality and durability to meet the needs of each individual site.
Amy brought her background in education and teaching, providing an understanding of how children learn, develop, and interact with the environments around them. This ensures our spaces aren’t designed around equipment alone; they’re designed with their users in mind.
Tyla brought specialist craftsmanship and detailed knowledge of timber construction from his background as a skilled joiner. His expertise remains central to our manufacturing today: from understanding the characteristics of different timbers to ensuring each component is constructed and finished to the highest standards.
Together, these backgrounds created the approach that still defines Precision Timber today.
Understand the user. Solve the problem. Build it to last.
‘Grandad’s Garage’ was our original workshop, a treasure trove where creativity flowed, ideas were shared, and our core values of quality and passion were forged. Grandad’s wisdom, that with honest materials and genuine skill anything can be created, continues to be central to our work.
As our expertise grew, so did our ambition. Today, we use the same garage-taught principles and wisdom in our modern, commercial-grade projects. With our deep craft heritage, creative bespoke designs, and expert sector knowledge, we have evolved into a leading UK provider of high-quality, sustainable outdoor equipment and environments. Today, our team works with schools, nurseries, local authorities, leisure destinations, hospitality operators, developers, and other organisations looking to create outdoor environments with a stronger sense of purpose and identity.
We are not just manufacturers; we are designers, engineers, and educators, committed to delivering playgrounds that stand the test of time, both physically and developmentally. The legacy of ‘Grandad’s Garage’ lives on through Precision Timber: what began in one small workshop has grown into a specialist team designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke outdoor environments for schools, leisure destinations, hospitality venues and communities across the UK.
A lot has changed since Grandad’s Garage. The team is bigger. The workshop is bigger. The projects are bigger. And they can be found far beyond Yorkshire.
But many things have not changed. We still believe details matter. We still believe the best solution starts with understanding what the space needs to achieve. And we still believe that if something is worth building, it is worth building properly. Those principles started long before Precision Timber had a name. And they continue to shape every project we create today.
As we’ve grown, an increasingly important principle has been protecting the individuality of our projects. We believe a great outdoor environment shouldn’t feel as though it has been selected from a catalogue. Where possible, we design around the landscape rather than working against it. We consider how children will move through a space, where challenge should sit, how different ages and abilities can interact with it, and how materials will change as the environment matures.
Whatever the needs, the objective remains the same: create a unique space that gives people a reason to keep coming back.
