Overview
As part of their dedicated commitment to the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, Lawrence View Primary School sought to supercharge their outdoor provision with a high-impact physical challenge. They identified a steep, underutilised embankment as the perfect site for a landmark feature. Having successfully partnered with us on previous projects, the school invited us back to transform this grassy slope into a thrilling 6-metre embankment slide—proving that with the right architectural approach, even the simplest landscape features can become a star attraction.
We collaborated with the school to engineer a custom solution that promotes repetitive, active movement and builds physical confidence. By contouring the equipment to the natural profile of the hill, we created a feature that is both exhilarating and inherently safe. The bespoke installation includes:
A high-specification, stainless steel sliding surface designed for speed, durability, and a rewarding finish to every climb.
Built from sustainably sourced hardwood, these steps provide a sturdy, natural-looking ascent that blends seamlessly into the hillside.
Heavy-duty play ropes that support balance and upper-body coordination as students navigate the climb.
A robust entry gate featuring ergonomic grab-handles, allowing children to transition safely and independently into the sliding position.
A permeable, cushioned landing zone that offers superior safety protection while maintaining a natural, bark-like aesthetic.
By combining the natural strength of Robinia with industrial-grade steel and HDPE, we provided the school with a high-traffic asset that is built to withstand the rigours of daily play for years to come.
This project is a prime example of how to utilise existing geography to create high-value play opportunities. By installing the slide directly onto the embankment, we eliminated the need for high-level platforms, resulting in a feature that feels grounded and accessible. The use of earth-toned materials ensures the equipment enhances the school’s green space rather than cluttering it.
The result is a high-energy hub that perfectly aligns with the school’s OPAL goals, encouraging self-directed play and physical resilience. Since the installation, this “unused hill” has become the heart of the playground, providing a safe environment for children to develop strength, teamwork, and confidence during every break and lunchtime.
