Overview
Lawrence View Primary School presented us with an exciting architectural challenge: to unlock the dormant potential of a steep, unused embankment within their EYFS grounds. The school’s vision was to move beyond traditional flat-surface play and create a dynamic physical environment that would challenge their youngest learners’ gross motor skills and appetite for healthy risk-taking. Our response was a bespoke Robinia structure engineered to work with the natural topography, turning a “problem” slope into a high-visibility landmark for adventurous learning.
We collaborated with the school’s leadership to design a custom solution that utilises height and gravity to support child development. Handcrafted from premium, organic Robinia hardwood, the installation is designed for maximum durability and a natural aesthetic that complements the outdoor environment. The final design included:
A sophisticated crossing designed to build core strength and bilateral coordination, fully enclosed in high-tension netting for absolute safety.
Hand-carved with a specialist cross-hatched tread pattern, these steps ensure the hillside remains a safe, accessible learning tool even during the damp British winter.
A high-level vantage point that serves as a hub for imaginative role-play, offering children a unique perspective of their surroundings.
By selecting sustainably sourced Robinia – one of the hardest and most rot-resistant timbers available – we have provided Lawrence View with a permanent, low-maintenance asset that will serve students for decades.

The new climbing unit has fundamentally changed the flow of the Lawrence View playground. By reclaiming the hillside, we have expanded the school’s usable square footage, creating a zone that promotes teamwork, confidence, and physical resilience.
Our installation approach focused on seamless integration. Rather than flattening the land, we harnessed the incline to create natural levels of difficulty. This bespoke “hillside” approach demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a disused area into the most popular destination on campus. The result is a safe, stimulating, and aesthetically pleasing environment where pupils can test their limits in a controlled, beautifully crafted setting.
“We are incredibly impressed with how Precision Timber utilised such a difficult space. What was once a dead area of the field is now the focal point of our EYFS provision. The quality of the Robinia wood is stunning, and the children’s confidence has soared since the installation.”
This project is a hallmark of our commitment to bespoke, durable, and engaging outdoor environments. Whether we are engineering a hillside climbing unit in Nottingham or a themed adventure boat for a primary school field, we specialise in turning complex visions into safe, long-lasting realities. We don’t just supply equipment; we create bespoke play landscapes that enhance early years development and stand the test of time.
