Overview
Returning to Low Moor Primary School is always a highlight for our team. For this phase, the focus shifted to their EYFS department, where a tired and underutilised plot of land was restricting the children’s developmental potential. The school’s vision was to replace the “ordinary” with the “extraordinary” – creating a sprawling, adventurous haven that navigates a challenging sloping terrain to offer sensory discovery, physical challenge, and a dash of fairytale magic.
We utilised the natural elevation of the site to create a multi-level landscape that encourages children to climb, crawl, and explore. By pairing organic Robinia timber with innovative groundworks, we delivered a high-spec environment packed with purposeful features:
A whimsical centerpiece featuring a lookout platform, integrated stainless steel slide, timber access steps, and a "secret" tunnel opening for imaginative role-play.
A dedicated scaling challenge featuring natural robinia uprights and heavy-duty reinforced ropes to build gross motor skills and physical confidence.
A tactile station designed to stimulate young minds through a variety of textures, moving parts, and interactive elements.
A sheltered, timber-framed seating area with built-in benches, providing a calm sanctuary for group storytelling or quiet observation.
A combination of Gabion rock retaining walls for structural stability, self-binding gravel pathways for durability, and premium artificial grass for year-round safety.
Authentic natural shingles that provide a rustic "woodland" aesthetic while offering superior weather protection.
By integrating structural engineering with creative play, we transformed a logistical challenge into a visual asset. The use of premium Robinia and Gabion stone ensures that the new landscape is not only beautiful but virtually maintenance-free and built to withstand the heavy footfall of a busy school environment.

The EYFS project at Low Moor was as much a civil engineering task as it was a masterclass in joinery. Managing the significant sloping terrain required the strategic installation of Gabion rock walls – a solution that is both incredibly robust and aesthetically striking. Our team worked meticulously to ensure the transition from the gravel pathways to the Hobbit Pod was seamless, safe, and accessible for even the smallest legs.
By pre-fabricating the Hobbit Pod in our workshop and hand-shingling the roof on-site, we maintained our signature high standard of British craftsmanship while minimising disruption to the school day. The result is a total environmental overhaul where the “run-down” has been replaced by a dynamic, safe, and inspiring world of play that feels like a natural extension of the children’s imagination.
“We are over the moon with the products provided by Precision Timber. The outdoor play areas are exactly what we envisioned for our nursery. The children are absolutely loving the new equipment, and it has been fantastic to see them playing and developing new skills every day. The team was brilliant to work with and helped us bring our ideas to life!” — Martyn Lord, Deputy Headteacher
The Low Moor EYFS project demonstrates our commitment to delivering measurable improvements to school grounds. By transforming an unusable slope into a high-functioning, multi-level learning zone, we have effectively increased the school’s usable outdoor teaching space by over 30%. Our strategic use of Gabion retaining walls and self-binding gravel has eliminated previous drainage issues and terrain restrictions, providing a 100% all-weather accessible site. Schools trust us because our builds don’t just look extraordinary; they solve critical logistical headaches and provide a tangible boost to student engagement.
